Abstract

Currently, Brazil is one of the largest dam constructors in the world and the impacts of these projects are multiple, causing environmental destruction and displacement of hundreds of rural families from their home territories, having effects on material and immaterial levels in people’s lives. Method: This study aimed to know the daily changes that occurred in the life of a rural family affected by the implantation of the Serra do Facão (SEFAC) dam, residents of the rural community Pires Belo, located in the municipality of Catalão–Goiás (Brazil). The research conducted interviews and observations with all family members (four people).Results and discussion: Concluding that this individuals are marked by feelings of sadness, revolt and anguish when were perceived to have had their territories flooded by the dam. They report negative environmental impacts, such as changes in landscapes and destruction of fauna and flora and tell about the loss of friendships they had with neighbors and the frailties related to work and income after construction. It is understood that occupational therapy can contribute in the scope of research and intervention in the contexts described in the present research, in favor of the recognition of these rural subjects as citizens and collaborating in the construction of a sustainable and popular social development project. Conclusions: The daily life of the people affected by dams is totally marked by the deterritorialization, which inflicts challenges to (re) organize their lives, being fundamental the ethical, political and social position of agents who contribute to think on alternatives involving these contradictions.
