Abstract

The present article proposes the task of interpreting the notion of infinity (τὸ ἄπειρον), expounded by Aristotle in his Physics (1995), in the light of the notion of the transcendental, as he presents it in his Critique of Pure Reason (2011). This proposal arises from the unique status that Aristotle gives to the notion of potential infinity, which is neither substance nor accident. This suggests a non-objectual interpretation of it, which brings it closer to the notion of the transcendental proposed by Kant (cf. KrV, B25). This exposition can be orienting insofar as Kant and his commentators have better conceptual tools to deal with the strange concept of Aristotelian potential infinity.
